- Born 1846 in Toulon, studies at the local Lycée and Séminaire. Clerk at the Toulon Mont-de-Piété (pawnshop) from 1868 to 1891. An eye disease led him to retire and devote himself to literature. He then lived in Paris, later in Belley, where he died in 1908. [1][2][3][4]
