Manhire was born and died, and spent most of his life in Cornwall, England. He started out as a schoolteacher in Bugle, near St. Austell, but switched to music, becoming active as an accompanist (organ and piano) and composer in South West England. He is also remembered for his Elementary Pianoforte Manual, a popular tutor book in the early 20th century.
