"Schemelli attributes it to 'J. H. Till', of whom nothing is known, unless he is identified with Jakob T. Till (1713-83)" (Terry, J.S. Bach's Original Hymn-tunes for Congregational Use, page 7). Note: therefore while he provided the text for BWV 466 and was alive no later than Bach's time (assuming BWV 466 is genuine Bach), he could have been alive substantially earlier.
