While working on the sixth symphony (CNW 30), Nielsen was commissioned to write the stage music for Harald Bergstedt's dramatization of the old ballad, Ebbe Skammelsen. It has not been possible to establish when Nielsen was asked to compose the music, but according to his letters and diary entries it was completed in haste in the weeks before 12 June 1925, when the manuscript was end-dated.
