The work was originally intended for a benefit concert in connection with the construction of Grundtvigskirken (Grundtvig Church) in Copenhagen. The plans were changed, and during the first months of 1931 Nielsen composed and arranged the music for the play which received its first performance at The Royal Theatre on 4 April 1931.
