These trios were published anonymously as a satire on German music, perceived at the time to be heavy and cerebral. A report entitled "Musical Caricature in Private Circulation" appeared in the London paper Morning Chronicle on 31 January 1792, which described the publication with its cheeky title-page vignette:
Apparently the satire was directed at Haydn, visiting London in 1792 (the fact Haydn was Austrian seemed not to be important); the newspaper guessed (probably correctly) that the composer was Felice Giardini, a known Haydn-adversary, who was at that time resident in London.
