According to Grove Music, the original title on the 1851 publication was 3 Stücke. Brandus (a Parisian publisher), in their 1851 publication of these pieces, changed the name to Chants, which was a straight translation of the word "lied". The London publisher Robert Cocks & Co., also in 1851, took the French title rather than the original 1851 German title. Grove Music lists this under "Character-pieces".
