Extra Information | Four Movements for Violin and Cello is a short composition divided in four contrasting sections. The first is the most angular. It starts aggressively, retreats, and then returns to a quite relentless forward motion that plays two quite sparse themes against each other. The second is more playful, in a simple A B A form. We hear a first theme recognizable, plucked by the violin, enter a second (B) section after a while, and then the original theme comes back as a variation. The third movement is somber: a strict call and response (the violin and cello play in alternation), only interrupted by the most dramatic climax of the whole piece. The fourth movement is fast, and brash and bold, with just a moment of reflection in the middle. |
