Five Games of Canfield is a suite of five short piano pieces produced by way of playing five separate games of Canfield. The games pick which notes could be used within each piece. Originally written in 1996, this work was going to contain other elements of randomly chosen material, like using dice to pick time signatures, but that plan was discarded in order to allow for more artistic expression. In 2017 I decided to return to Five Games of Canfield, making small creative changes, with some extensive editing (mainly with articulations and phrasing). The last movement, a rag, is the only one with a conventional form and represents a time when I was infatuated with ragtime piano. The short duration of the pieces was influenced by similar piano works like Mikrokosmos by Bela Bartok and Sports et divertissements by Erik Satie. Let the games begin!
