The piece is based on the opening of Janáček’s Sinfonietta (1926), using the pentatonic scale there outlined (at written pitch) to generate three modes containing the 12 tones of the chromatic scale. These modes are then used exclusively in each instrument for portions of the music, before switching and eventually dissolving. Timbral considerations are taken from the Sinfonietta (fifths become tritones become fifths again). Similarly, the overall rhythm is generated from the instability generated at the beginning with the cello entry.
