Extra Information

According to Grove Music, this was "a systematic pedagogical presentation of 60 compositions documenting his conception of instrumental counterpoint; it appears to be the earliest collection of its kind in the Baroque period. Through this textbook, which foreshadows Bach's Musicalisches Opfer, Vitali presents the essence of his compositional art through canons, examples of double counterpoint and nine works in the principal contemporary instrumental forms. The works vary in size and scope and are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. The collection also includes a number of unusual pieces, for example a balletto in three different metres simultaneously, a passacaglia which modulates from B♭ to B through the circle of 5ths over some 261 bars and another balletto for two string instruments which has one line written in G♭ and the other in F♯."
