The opus differences are possibly the result of Schlesinger and Schott assigning the same piece to different sets of pieces. Schlesinger paired Ballade No.1 with Nocturne, Op.111, No.2 and Schott inserted the Ballade into a large set of 5 pieces where it is the only piece that is not based on another composer’s work: Op.62, No.1 Fantaisie sur le voile blanc, Romance d'Hipp. Monpou Op.62, No.2 Fantaisie sur Ah! par pitié, d'Adolphe Adam Op.62, No.3 Ballade sans paroles Op.62 No.4 Bagatelle sur Jacquot sur un motif favori de J. J. Masset de l'opéra comique (same piece as Op.56) Op.62 No. 5 Impromptu brillant sur La maschera, opéra comique en 2 actes de G. Kastner
