History

Benziger of Einsiedeln in Switzerland was a printer and publisher with strong Catholic connections, which was most successful in the period 1850-1914.
Franz Benziger (1758–1827) set up a printing works, and his nephews Carl und Nikolaus Benziger added a publishing division. This produced both Catholic devotional books and general literature. At its peak in the 1890s it published books and magazines in 20 languages, and had over 1000 employees in Switzerland alone.
As for music publishing, HMB lists 40 items in the period 1860-80, by composers such as Hanisch, Stehle and Stöcklin. It was thus a smaller music publisher than the leading Regensburg firms such as Coppenrath and Fritz Gleichauf.
In the 20th century the firm shrank, and it joined Patmos Verlag in 1984.
