He had a varied career, spent partly in his native Innsbruck, partly as a soldier (1813-16) and finally from 1824 as director of music at St. Stephen's cathedral in Vienna. He benefitted from the patronage of the aristocratic Firmian family, famous for the Archbishopric of Salzburg, Leopold Mozart's employer.
