Gerstenbüttel worked in Hamburg as the Cantor of the Johanneum and was elected in 1675 as the successor to Christoph Bernhard to direct music in the five main churches in Hamburg. Gerstenbüttel was succeeded by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1721.
