His father, Peter Albrecht von/van Hagen (ca. 1750-1803) was also a composer. Both forms of the surname were apparently used as the family was of German origin but had lived in Holland. There is some confusion over the correct middle name of the son. Father and son referred to themselves as P.A. von/van Hagen, Sr. and Jr., but it seems the son was probably Peter Albertus.
