Born in Cadiz. Appointed to Royal Court of Lisbon in 1796, left for Madrid ca.1798 and for Paris in or around 1800, spent most of the rest of his life in France (entering, in 1801, the service of Joséphine de Beauharnais, wife of (at the time) first consul Napoléon Bonaparte.)
