He published under his real name, as well as under the pseudonym Willie Ware; the latter was confirmed by a peculiar note in the New York Clipper, 14 June 1884 (p.14): "J. William Van Namee, M.D., poet and song-writer, better known to the profession as Willie Ware, is dying of consumption ...". [4]
He is also presumed to have published under a female pseudonym: Maud Irving. [5][6][7]
