- Born on Kefalonia to a Greek mother and English father, he studied under the Corfiot composer Nikolaos Mantzaros, who had strong Italian ties; and Stevens was active in organizing performances by Italian touring opera companies in Greek theatres. He had a brief spell working in Paris in 1879, and returned to Greece for a short-lived post at the Athens Conservatory as director and piano teacher.
