Robert Tosh was born in 1926 in Frederick, Maryland. As the son of a pastor, Tosh grew up in Philadelphia and later, North Carolina. During World War II he was enrolled in a secret program in the Japanese language. After being injured in a parachute jump, he commuted daily to the 11th Airborne Hospital in Sendai, Japan, serving as chaplain. He played the organ at Tohoku Gakuin University until the war ended. In 1948 he earned his B.A. in Music at Catawba College in North Carolina. He returned to Japan in the early 1950s to repair organs and teach English at Miyagi Gakuin University. There he met his future wife, Audrey. In 1954 he completed his M.A. in Music Theory and Composition, and in 1955 he completed his M. Music, both at the University of Redlands. Tosh returned to Japan on many occasions over the years to teach English and repair organs. He was an organist for years at Trinity United Methodist Church in Pomona, CA. He died at 96 years old in Claremont, CA.
