Best known as editor of the monumental Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, published 1875-1912 in 57 volumes, with 26,000 entries. It is available on line: for example Beethoven.
From 1900 to 1911 he was chairman of the Preußische Musikgeschichtliche Kommission which produced the 42-volume Denkmäler deutscher Tonkunst.
