History
London music publishers, music sellers, and piano manufacturers. Thomas Culliford (b.1747), his son-in-law Charles Barrow (b.1759), and William Rolfe worked together as piano makers for the firm of Longman & Broderip - Culliford from 1779 (as Longman's principal keyboard instrument manufacturer), Rolfe from 1784, and Barrow from 1789. When Longman & Broderip filed for bankruptcy in 1795, the three of them set up their own business at 112 Cheapside.
Two years later, Culliford and Barrow set up the firm Culliford & Co. at 172 Strand (corner of Surry-Street), but ceased trading after going bankrupt in 1798. William Rolfe continued publishing alone from 112 Cheapside until c.1806, though the firm of William Rolfe and Sons continued making and selling pianos there until c.1840.
