Misc. Notes Hector Berlioz included in La Damnation de Faust (his so-called légende dramatique of 1845–46) the ballet number, Danse des sylphes. Camille Saint-Saëns satirized the double bass when he quoted the sylphlike melody from that dance in his portrayal of the elephant—scored for double bass solo(i)—part of his musical suite, Le Carnaval des animaux (1886). But the joke is now on Saint Saëns, since the Danse des sylphes makes an excellent, idiomatic recital piece for solo double bass, especially in this neo-classical rendering for double bass and piano. The piano score is presented in two keys to accommodate a double bass with either orchestral or solo tuning (A-E-B-F-sharp).
