• Original Version

Originally published in four volumes of 4, 4, 4, and 3 song, as well as in a single "Sonder-Ausgabe." In both cases the songs are numbered I.a-d, II.a-d, III.a-d, and IV.a-c. A 1951 reprint removes the numbering, but preserves the groupings on the title page. Songs are numbered 1 through 15 in the autograph score. The 1951 edition lacks the BSS numbers. Revised in 1935-48 (see new version below).

• New Version

Thoroughly revised 1935-48; some of the songs revised multiple times; only No.12 not revised. Dates below are from Hindemith's work lists, and represent only some of the revisions. He considered the revision complete in March 1941 after work on number 9 and one of the "Vom Tode Mariä" songs (confusingly identified as the second of these but no. the recomposiition of "Mariä Verkündigung."

Includes extensive introductory remarks by the composer (English translation, by Arthur Mendel, also published separately by AMP, 1953).
