The piece was originally written for the solemn celebration of the 200th anniversary of St. Mary Consolatrix Afflictorum as patron of Luxembourg-city in 1866. The text written for this version was "Grüss Gott". Menager arranged the cantata a year later (1867) for a fundraising for the poor. Besides some small adaptations in the music, he gave the cantata a new text ("O Sang! O Sang!") and title ("Der Gesang")
