For some reason, one reason we sleep is so we can take the raw materials of consciousness – our memories, desires, and anxieties – and rearrange and exaggerate them into new scenarios: enlightening, thrilling, distressing, or absurd. This is not unlike the approach I adopted when writing Dream Variations. The original characteristics of the theme (perhaps imitating the interior and exterior sensations of falling asleep) are exaggerated and distorted in the succeeding eight variations: deepening breath becomes a frenzied intoxication, passing anxiety becomes an actual predator, and what were simple wind chimes become massive church bells.
