Pasodoble

For Winds and Piano? (Marquina Narro)

Valentín de Arín (1854-1912)
Publisher. Info. Madrid: Fuentes y Asenjo, n.d.(ca.1910). Plate FyA 765.

Misc. Notes The cover page indicates Valentín de Arín as arranger, and the piece is actually an arrangement. But Arín is not indicated on the first page, neither is this piece found in the list on the back cover page. Either the Pasodoble is actually Marquina's composition (arranged by Arín) and not Chapí's, or it is a Chapí's composition arranged by Marquina (and has nothing to do with Arín). The first version is more probable because Marquina is famous exactly for pasodobles, and Chapí had no custom of arranging his own compositions into light pieces.
On the other hand, it looks very much like a piano score for a wind band piece, judging by the fact that instrument names are in the piano stave as well as the top stave, and the fact that there are just too many instrument names in the plural; this would be quite a large ensemble. Tagged as a wind band arrangement for now.

Navigation etc.

  • In No.5 sing 3 more actors: Frasquito, Amigo 1 y 2, but they have no separate parts and sing with the chorus.
  • Worldcat search shows many recordings of selections (and fantasias, dances based on music from, etc. etc.) over the years (often with orchestra, though it is unclear whether the orchestration is Chapí's) and one recent recording that may be of the entire zarzuela. Google books suggests a date of 1892 rather than Sibley's suggested ca.1880.
  • The una gitana is called Socorro in the ms full score, Dotesio vocal score and in some recordings.
  • The Pasabodle was arranged by composer or someone else (Marquina?) from tunes of the zarzuela. Originally for orchestra? See [1] on Navarro's ca.1959 recording. There are some recordings on YouTube.
