This song was originally composed for the comic opera Laure et Pétrarque (1780, libretto by Fabre d'Églantine) by Victor-Louis Simon (1764-1820). It is said it became especially popular at the outset of the French Revolution, it being hinted the "bergère" or shepherdess of the song was actually the unfortunate Marie-Antoinette who liked to play the role of being one in her particular domain (Hameau de la Reine) at Versailles. The first stanza of the song can indeed be interpreted as alluding to her.
