The composer had written three theoretical documents during the 20th Century; "On The Formulation of Tone Rows and Clusters", "On Theory', and "Serialminimalist Files for Composition". This piece derives from the mid 1970's document "On Theory", which although
distributed to theorists and composers, failed to secure publication in theory journals at the time . Interestingly it came to the attention of David Lewin (music theorist) in the 1980's, an encounter which led to the composer's interactions with Lewin over the course of approximately 1 year.
That being the case, this composition is a realization of the functional matrix as it relates, restructures, and addresses tonal inversion.
