History

Joseph-René Lafleur (1812-1874), luthier (specialist bow maker) and music shop owner in Paris, started publishing music in the 1840s. The bulk production took off around 1852, mainly light music (and some religious work) for (small) orchestra and military band. In 1853 J.R. Lafleur obtained an official license for intaglio printing. About 1857 his eldest son (Louis)-Alphonse Lafleur (1839-1895) joined him in the business (Lafleur père et fils / Lafleur et fils).

Around 1862 Joseph-René started a branch (publishing & instruments) in London, with a second son, (Victor)-Edouard Lafleur (b.1841): Lafleur and Son; actually the establishment of this London firm and the first five years of management were in the hands of Jules Rivière, a good family friend, and godfather of Edouard Lafleur.

The Paris branch became Lafleur et fils aîné, later -- upon retirement of the father -- Lafleur fils aîné, and was finally absorbed by E. Gaudet, upon the death of Alphonse Lafleur in 1895. London went on for a long time: around 1880 it became J.R. Lafleur & Son, in 1917 it was acquired by Oliver Hawkes, continuing under the name J.R. Lafleur & Son, Ltd., imprint lasting at least until the 1940s.
