Hrm. I mislike placing something in the overpopulated pieces category, but 'symphonic poem' implies a story of some sort, whether detailed or very sketchy*- Hofmeister (HMB 1907 p105) has this as a Bild (picture), the alternative title here similarly (tableau) which is far more static in implication. retagging as pieces? - Schissel

*(MPH does describe this as a symphonic poem and seems to imply the composer thought of it as above, however, even inspired by Lermontov's poem- that would be the "story of some sort"? (begins "Three palms proudly grew in Arabia fair."))

- Regarding the previous questions about the structure -- This is certainly a symphonic poem. I did a close analysis for my doctoral coursework and it revealed that this piece is a series of musical episodes that follows Lermontov's poem stanza-by-stanza. -FS
