In this piece "Linda" is pouring her heart out in a letter to her friend. She reads portions of the letter aloud from time to time; the soprano takes some of the words and turns them into song. The song expresses the depth of feeling that her words only suggest. The style of the soprano's part evolves from a "country-and-western" style to something closer to opera by the end. The piano plays a third role in all this, ranging from almost a bar-room background to some quite virtuosic and dissonant passages. The piano ends the piece in a wistful, jazzy vein.
