"Ma Follia" is a series of variations on the famous "La Folia" ground bass. Many composers have written Folia variations, including Corelli, whose variations are popular among recorder players. This piece is written as a reaction against the Corelli variations; one might say they take up where Corelli left off. For instance, Ma Follia features a variation with a 4-over-3 rhythm, a hokket variation where 2 groups of recorders interweave, some chromatism, and finally a jazzy variation that quotes the "Chattanooga Choo-choo". The set of variations ends with the requisite variation in major, and a grand choral finale.
