Opus number - Op.34 or Op.26? - Kaun apparently reassigned opus numbers later in his life. In his Werkverzeichnis (Hugo Kaun Werkverzeichnis, 1929) the octet is listed as op.26, first published by R. Rühle in 1891. But parts and score published by the publishing venture of his brother Richard in 1892 are clearly marked Op.34, and that is the only extant set of this piece. To increase the confusion "Vier Stücke für Pianoforte" (Hamburg: Rahter, 1902) was also published as op.34. - In the card-catalog at D-B several other examples of duplicated op. numbers are documented.

A recording by the Berolina Ensemble has recently (Nov. 20, 2015) been released, together with the Piano Quintet Op.39 and the String Quintet Op.28 (also published as Op.39, but a completely different work) by Musikproduktion Dabringhaus & Grimm
