Instrumentation | 6 viols |
Actually, composed for 6 violas da gamba, not 6 open instruments, though open instrumentation is a possibility from arrangements, etc. Manuscript copy at New York Public Library confirms this. Often grouped together with a Passamezzo galliard (as on Paul Nicholson's recording of the two on keyboard for Hyperion. His performance of the Pavan is slightly faster in total timing at 6:09.)
