"Somehow and oddly Kaun opus 39 appears in HMB 1893 page 319 as "erstes quintett" for 2 violins, viola and 2 cellos- before either the opus 28 string quintet or the opus 39 piano quintet was published. ?! (Op.39 published 1901 according to the Werkverzeichnis, by Anton J. Benjamin before being published by Rahter (which was later purchased by Benjamin, interestingly.))"

To explain: The extant published score (Berlin: Richard Kaun (1893)) of the 1. String quintet in D-B is marked Op.39, but the parts (also published by Richard Kaun) are marked Op.28.

"This is the same work as Opus 28- transcribed for piano quintet and lowered a tone. (Source: Cobbett)"

Cobbett has here been misled by the utter confusion of Kaun's Op. numbers. The 1. String Quintet published by Richard Kaun as Op.28/39 (see above) is a completely different work from the Piano Quintet Op.39. The Piano Quintet may (or may not - there are no references to this assertion by Cobbett or Edition Silvertrust) have been first conceived as a 2. String Quintet.

A performance 1906-1-14 in Leipzig of the quintet is mentioned, as a new work (növitat) though not necessarily as a premiere, in Musikalisches Wochenblatt, Jahrgang XXXVII, No.3, 18. Januar 1906, p.58.

Both the Piano Quintet Op.39 and the String Quintet Op. 28/39 have recently (Nov. 20, 2015) been released on a recording of the Berolina Ensemble (together with the octet Op.34/26) by Musikproduktion Dabringhaus & Grimm.
