PROGRAM NOTES
Trio No.1, for violin, violoncello and pianoforte, is a rather enigmatic piece that is divided in three connected sections. The first builds very slowly from a rather tranquil place to a strong climax. The middle one is characterized by a marked thinning of the ensemble texture. It starts with high a register figuration played by the piano that continues until the end of the section. After a while violin, cello and a second voice at the piano alternate in a sort of distant dialogue that eventually dissipates leaving only the piano figuration in the foreground. The last section of the piece returns to the mood of the end of the first section. It is much stronger and decisive. It starts fortissimo (very loud), and never really let go until the end of the piece.
