The original editors hypothesized a date of composition between 1853-55, contemporaneous with Brahms's Op.8 Trio. An alternative potential composer is Albert Dietrich. The manuscript, made by a copyist, was dated to the early-to-mid 1860s, or as late as a decade after the putative date of composition; no title page has survived. Brahms is known to have referred to several discarded trios composed prior to Op.8, of which this could potentially be one.
