Ob MS Mus. Sch. D245, 246, 247 is a very sizable collection of pieces for viols, compiled by John Merro in the late 1620s or early 1630s. Buried in those 3 volumes are a number of works seemingly for viola bastarda - they are elaborate embellishments/divisions for unaccompanied bass viol. The works on which they are based cannot always be determined, but one piece is labeled "Sound out my voyce" and bears the name 'Alfonso' which enables the identification of Alfonso Ferrabosco ii. (Sound out my voyce is an 'Englished' version of Palestrina's Vestiva i colli, that had appeared in Musica Transalpina in 1588.) The 8 pieces included here are therefore all tentatively attributed to Ferrabosco ii.

6 of these pieces appear in D246 written in staff notation. Two of them are based based on Sound out my voyce, but they are different settings of it! To further complicate matters, two of the pieces in D246 also appear in D247, but are there notated in tablature (in ffefh tuning). The versions here retain the original clefs and barring with minimal editorial intervention.
