Navigation etc.

The composer is given on the title page only as J.S.A.B, which was taken to mean "Johann Schmelzer Antonio Bertali". While the collection contains some sonatas by these composers, several sonatas have been identified as works by other composers; Samuel Capricornus and David Pohle. Some are still unidentified.

The first six sonatas of Duodena Secunda were published in 1671 as Capricornus' "Continuation der neuen wohl angestimmten Taffel-Lustmusic mit 3. 4. Instrumenten una cum basso con"

The second violin part of sonatas 2 and 4 of book 2 reaches as low as C, and does not require an E string for the higher register at all. A viola is more likely.
