Ragtime was composed when I was 19. This is by no means a typical ragtime, having been partially inspired by Stravinsky’s Ragtime for 11 instruments (Stravinsky never actually heard any ragtime before writing his, having just received the sheet music to a piano rag in the mail). So likewise, my atypical “ragtime” combines several styles into one, and likely owes as much to Prokofiev as it does to Stravinsky (and a touch of jazz). Comedy and violence are forced together throughout this brief piece.
