  • Grove Music defines a ruggiero as "A characteristic harmonic bass line popular in Italy in the late 16th century and the 17th, chiefly as the basis of sets of instrumental variations . . ." [there is a] "theory that the name derives from the first word of a stanza of Ariosto's epic poem Orlando furioso, ‘Ruggier, qual sempre fui’. The Ruggiero eventually became standardized as a type of ground bass for songs and dances."
