History
The firm was founded in Leipzig in 1846 by Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Siegel and Edmund Stoll. It was sold to Richard Linnemann and his brother Carl after Siegel's death in 1869. Under Richard Linnemann's management, the firm became an important rival to that established by Kistner, publishing works by Schumann, Spohr and Rubinstein. It acquired Holle's catalog from Julius Zwissler (L. Holle’s Nachfolger) in 1894. In 1903, a major expansion was initiated with the acquisition of the publisher E.W. Fritzsch, which culminated with the purchase of longtime rival Kistner in 1919. The name was changed to Kistner & Siegel in 1923.
Though devasted by the allied bombing of Leipzig in 1944-45, the firm re-opened after the war near Cologne in West Germany in 1948. After long legal negotiations the Leipzig and Cologne firms were re-united in 2013.
