Navigation etc.
Written in December 2022, and following up on String Quartet No.9 (The Little One), String Quartet No.10 (Hope) is a mid-sized string quartet that alternates between two main musical themes. The first comes in as a jolt, at the beginning of the piece. The second, much more hesitant and restrained, is heard immediately after. It develops into a short interlude that tapers off and leads to a return of the first theme, followed by a variation of the second, then a variation of the first, and so on. It represents an unresolved conflict, that peaks and ebbs, and cannot settle itself. The end of the piece, with its whimsical tune and soft spoken-ness, represents hope for some sort of closure.
