Hrm- didn't know this template had a variable, but apparently it does. Too sleepy to check how it works though I sort of see it - will check tomorrow. Since the items in the Music for the Nation section (well, one of its large sections- there are a few) have the URL hdl.loc.gov/loc.music/sm_date_._number_ , was thinking a sm_date_._number variable was a good (or good alternate - DU has two variables e.g.) way to make this specific, too... Template change Dec. 24, 2011
Just need to document that the template change that occurred on Dec. 24, 2011 will have resulted in broken links for any score the used the LOC template with the variable to link back to the score's page at the LOC. I don't believe this will have affected many works as most usage of the template up to now has been without using the variable. This "breakage" was necessary in order to introduce the ability to link to additional types of permanent URLs at the Library of Congress' website. --Cypressdome 02:03, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Further alternative?
the link http://memory.loc.gov/diglib/ihas/loc.natlib.sousa.200028136/default.html (for the Sousa Myrrha Gavotte) can't, I think, be approached using either alternative link here - neither ihas (no ihas after loc.natlib) nor option 2- maybe a 3rd?
- I did run across this issue back when I modified the template to allow the linking of scores from the Music for the Nation collection and the only solution I could come up with at that time (and now as well) is to use the generic LOC link in the scanner field and place a special Sousa collection template that can link to the score on the LOC website in the Misc. Notes field. I think it's a big enough sub-collection to warrant something like that. --Cypressdome 13:40, 31 March 2012 (EDT)
- Do we have this Sousa collection template now? I don't see it in Ext Lib Temp or in External Links Templates which would be a natural category... Eric 13:50, 14 April 2013 (EDT)
- Afraid not. When I started processing the LOC Sousa scans recently I decided to follow my own initial advice of using the generic LOC template in the scanner field (except of course for those scores found in the Music for the Nation collection) and including a link to the LOC page for the scans in the misc. notes field. --Cypressdome 17:22, 14 April 2013 (EDT)
- Further was concerned that the recent change would break the more "specific" LOC links but that worry (so far as I have been able to check, of course) proves to have been silly (for all that I approve of the change. There was such a problem with an earlier such template change, as I recall; these things aren't easy, I know, but I also don't at all doubt they're worth the calibrating.) That said, a Sousa template, or Sousa sub-LoC template, or something not a bad idea when possible! Eric 09:53, 4 May 2013 (EDT)
