Navigation etc.
Gilles de Rais fought with Joan of Arc, then retired to his chateau. There he became obsessed, first, with alchemy, transforming lead into gold; then, as a path to success in alchemy, he became a devotee of Satan. His offerings to Satan were children, whom he kidnapped from surrounding villages. In the end he was convicted of heinous crimes and burned at the stake (where he hastily reconverted to the Catholic faith). In this composition we imagine Gilles, well before his arrest, contemplating his own life and behavior. The style is not "jazz" so much as "jazz-ish".
