Extra Information | Grove Music does not list this among Holst's works, and the Curwen edition music itself says "English Traditional" (G.H.). The melody arranged by Holst was first published in Frederic Austin's 1909 arrangement; Austin stated in a later note that the melody and words were "in my childhood, current in my family". The English words were first published in the late eighteenth century, and may possibly be of French origin, since there several similar French lyrics recorded in the nineteenth century. |
