Nielsen started composing the music for the play 'Tove' in autumn 1907 and continued right up to the first performance in March 1908. The music was composed under great pressure of time and turned out to be a bigger task than Nielsen had thought. Nevertheless, he did end up looking back at it as a successful piece.
