Born in 1981 in Lecce, Luca Alfonso Rizzello earned a Violin Diploma from the Conservatory of Bari, a Bachelor’s in Baroque Violin from Lecce, a Master’s in Baroque Violin from Piacenza, and a Bachelor’s in Baroque Violin from The Hague (Netherlands) under Enrico Gatti.
He regularly performs on violin and viola with ensembles and orchestras in Italy, Europe, the USA, Argentina, and Israel. He has appeared with La Sfera Armoniosa (dir. Mike Fentross), the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, Collegium 1704 (dir. Vaclav Luks), Il Pomo d’Oro (dir. Maxim Emelyanychev), Luthers Bach Ensemble (dir. Timen Jan Bronda), Astrarium Consort (dir. Carlo Centemeri), Musica Temprana (dir. Adrian van der Spoel), Orquesta Vigo 430 (dir. Alfonso Sebastian Alegre), Orfeo Futuro (dir. Enrico Gatti, Alessandro Ciccolini, Pierfrancesco Borrelli), Cappella Musicale Corradiana (dir. Antonio Magarelli), Opera 2Day (dir. Hernan Schwartzman), and in duo or ensemble with Liuwe Tamminga.
He collaborates with organist Gilberto Scordari, performing 17th-century Italian and German repertoire both as part of the Duo De Finibus Terrae and with church and chamber groups such as the Schola Cantorum Barensis, Ensemble Prothimia, and the Baroque Orchestra of Messapia.
Rizzello has published a critical edition of Prothimia Suavissima (Musedita, 2011), a collection of sonatas of uncertain attribution dating back to 1672. He also founded Ensemble Prothimia, dedicated to the research and promotion of Antonio Bertali's repertoire. As part of the "Mainely Baroque" project at the University of Maine, USA, he has performed and taught courses alongside Rose Barrett, Gilberto Scordari and Ricardo Rodriguez Miranda.
He founded and directed the Early Music Festival "Antiqua Manent," which was held for five editions from 2010 to 2016 in the province of Lecce.
A passionate educator, from 2015 to 2019, Rizzello taught chamber music courses for "Mainely Baroque," organized by the University of Maine in Orono, USA. He taught Theory, Ear Training and Notation at the Gioacchino Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro and the Luca Campiani Conservatory in Mantua.
