More publishers! Diabelli - this was quite nice.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 03:00, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Telemann Oboe concertos

Hallo Carolus, after you renamed my upload someone else uploaded these two concerti again under "concerto for oboe": one of these should be deleted to clear up the composer page - could only a moderator do that? kalliwoda 08-01-2001 19:49 CET

I moved the file descriptions to the first created page, and converted the second page to a redirect for both concerti, and kept the redirects in the category. Hopefully that will help prevent such duplication in the future. Robert.Allen 04:58, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I was out of town until today. It's nice to have folks here who can take care of such housekeeping details. Carolus 00:46, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Fwd: Wasendock

Hello, I have a Litolff edition of Wagner Wasendonk song -all 5 - no date on the music anywhere, should I load them up Thanks Judit Kabath

Forwarded by.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 17:39, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I suspect these are PD worldwide. Litolff issued a great deal of Wagner around 1914, when Wagner's copyright expired in Germany. Carolus 00:47, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Backlog

We are starting to acquire a backlog of CR review items - could you clear these? I'm not sure I can. And I'm sure you saw my "archive" message. Too popular indeed!-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 01:51, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. And now the archive (I nag too much, as you have noticed. Don't take me seriously)-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 21:11, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 4, Andante

Hello Carolus,

thank you for the configuration - you are really rapid! As soon as I've scanned all my stuff for Harmonium and Piano Duet, I would like to open the section "List of Compositions Featuring the Harmonium". It may be only for a small community, but the material is very rare. What do I have to do? Many thanks and regards, Ralph Theo Misch, 01:14 (MEZ), August 6, 2009

I'll respond. Literally, just make a page List of Compositions Featuring the Harmonium (click the red link ot make the page), then organize it, first by composers, and then by their pieces. Make sure to add links.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 22:38, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Perlnerd666 is correct, just click on the red-link, add your text and save. That's all there is to it! Regards, Carolus 22:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Many thanks to you both! Ralph Theo Misch, 01:36 (MEZ), August 5, 2009

Messe pour deux voix égales, Op.167 (Chaminade, Cécile) ‎

Sorry - it's me again. I own all parts of that work and uploading the Kyrie from Europe was only an (perhaps dangerous) experiment. Should I better remove the score ore shall I add the rest? Best wishes, Ralph Theo Misch, 01:55 (MEZ), August 5, 2009

I would recommend that you abstain from uploading any more since it's most likely protected in the USA. No need to remove what's there, but I'd wait until we see some clarification on either the work's actual status in the US or a definitive decision about making items of this nature freely available for download in the US before adding any more movements. Carolus 23:19, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
OK. Thank you very much! Ralph Theo Misch, 02:04 (MEZ), August 6 (sic!), 2009

Souvenir de Hapsal, Op.2 (Tchaikovsky, Pyotr Ilyich)

Hello Carolus, to avoid mistakes in future, I've got a (perhaps silly) question: What means "n.d."? - The detailed date of edition I took from Hofmeister. Regards from Ralph Theo Misch, 01:08 (MEZ), August 9, 2009

'No date'. Therefore, if a date is included in parentheses, it's an educated guess.--KGill 00:30, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Or it could be a date garnered from another source- not on the score itself (sorry).--KGill 00:33, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

"No date" means there is no date printed on the score (or originally printed on the score). Simrock and Belaieff nearly always had dates on their scores - somewhere. If you found it in Hofmeister, that's about as good as it gets. You can put the date in parens (1886), meaning that it's a confirmed date. If you're guesstimating on the basis of plate numbers - some publishers are much more reliable than others about keep their numbers in an order useful for dating - use the (ca.1886). Avoid using c.1886 as it confuses some folks into thinking it's still under copyright. Carolus 03:50, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

That was instructive - thanks for your answers!--Ralph Theo Misch, 00:09 (MEZ), August 10, 2009

Busoni edition of WTC1 on Bach work pages

Thanks for splitting up the Schirmer files to fit on these work pages: WTC1, Nos. 1-12 and WTC1, Nos. 13-24. (That's work I probably should have done. I'm still learning.) Also, I removed Petri's and Mugellini's names as editors on the Busoni Breitkopf German editions (uploaded by Innocente), since Larry Sitsky (pp. 177-179) states they did not participate in editing these particular volumes (See also Wikipedia article, which I confess to having written.) Copyright status could probably be changed to "V/V/V" reflect that information. (I'm assuming it was "C/V/C" because of Petri's name being attached to it.) --Robert.Allen 19:49, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Salve Regina (Pearsall, Robert Lucas)

Hi Carolus, thanks again for your reaction! I was sure of what I was doing - the "date" on the title page was arduous to decipher and I thought to be confirmed by Hofmeister. Then I recognized your correction - a bitter relapse for me. Best wishes, --Ralph Theo Misch 22:27, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Aguado

Hi Carolus, people seem to be thanking you in this section of your page .. I'll add another. Somehow I couldn't see that all these Op.2 works were actually the same rondos - Thank you for undoing my mess! I left a small note on the 'discussion' page about the different numbering etc. I owe you one! --Homerdundas 18:50, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

A question about the scans obtained from other websites of Aguado: There seem to be some which are actually published collections of other works, such as Menuets et Valses (Aguado, Dionisio) and Contredanses à 2/4, Op.11bis (Aguado, Dionisio). Homerdundas has been very helpful in pointing these things out. However, because they are in fact the same works as elsewhere, would it be appropriate to split the PDFs and upload the relevant portions to the work pages to which they belong? (I have already done this in the second case, but am not sure if that was a mistake.)--KGill talk email 02:49, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it would be an excellent idea to split the collections and include the subsequent alternate printings - especially if it is a different engraving. Carolus 05:01, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

I've done this where possible, but Nos.7 and 8 from the original of Menuets et Valses do not appear in any of our other work pages. What would you recommend?--KGill talk email 01:41, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

My inclination is to leave them for the time being. Do you happen to know which works they are originally from? It's not impossible that they first appeared in this collection, but they were more likely included form an earlier issue. If they can be correctly identified, it's good to set up new pages. Otherwise, wait until more things surface (which they seem to have a way of doing around here!). Carolus 20:12, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I don't, although I will try to research it a bit more. The two pieces are an Andante (3/4 time, A minor, page and a half) and its corresponding Valse (3/8, also A minor, half a page). It looks like it would fit right in in Op.12, in fact- the same kind of thing.
Actually, there's another clue that they may have appeared in this collection first: All the other pieces in that set have been identified by an unknown person as whatever set they belong to (in a somewhat illegible scrawl), but not these two. So I don't have much hope as of now.--KGill talk email 23:04, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Actually, scratch that (sorry for the wasted comment). I'm guessing they're part of Op.5 (4 Andantes and 4 Waltzes)- how come I didn't see that before? :-) So I think I'll upload it and just say that it's not currently known which number they are.--KGill talk email 00:14, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Aus meinem Tagebuch, Op.82 (Reger, Max)

Hi Carolus, I own part III of that opus by the same publisher, plate number 17725, but without the editorial notice <Teichmuller, Robert (1863 - 1939)>. Is it now even public domain in EU? Thanks and regards --Ralph Theo Misch 22:17, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

It will be on January 1. Copyright terms run to the end of the year. It's already free in the USA and Canada, of course. Post away! Carolus 19:03, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

I've started - the rest will follow soon. Thanks and regards --Ralph Theo Misch 21:01, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Carolus. You may have seen the discussion here and on the forums. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks — P.davydov 07:03, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Yradier / Salaverri

Hello,
I just noticed that we have two categories for Sebastián Iradier Salaverri and Sebastián Yradier, who are the same person. Since the latter name is by far the most recognized (as far as I know), should I move the single work listed for Salaverri to Yradier? KGill talk email 16:43, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes. Thanks for catching it, too! Carolus 19:54, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Emil Kreuz

Hello Carolus, I have noticed a composer name misspelling: Category:Kreutz, Emil should be Kreuz, Emil. There is only 1 work on his page ( Viola Concerto, Op.20 (Kreutz, Emil) ) along with a list of compositions. Would you mind correcting this when you have an opportunity? Best regards, Hrdinský 05:41, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

No problem. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. 05:42, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Händel, 9 deutsche Arien

Hi Carolus, in the forums recently there was a request for the "9 deutsche Arien" of Händel. I found the Breitkopf Edition (Nr.5458) in my collection of sheet music. There is a copyright notice: "Copyright 1931/1959 by Breitkopf&Härtel". The Editor is Herman Roth, who died in 1938. So I think, the music is public domain, isn´t it? If this is true, I can scan and upload the music, but only in several weeks.Notenschreiber 08:42, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Go ahead and upload it. I suspect the copyright notice is a bogus one as Breitkopf originally issued many similar things without a notice - only adding the claim on a later printing. I believe these 9 arias have been reprinted by Kalmus-Alfred, but I'll have to check. Thanks, Carolus 19:31, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Prométhée triomphant (Hahn, Reynaldo)

Hi, this page says that the librettist died in 1963, which would make this under copyright in Canada (since the words are very much included in the files). Should this be corrected? KGill talk email 23:38, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for catching it. You're right, it's not free in Canada. Carolus 00:33, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

With apologies for the ordering mistakes-

wanted to say thanks for all that processing on my recent submissions. Much appreciated! Eric 03:04, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome - Sibley has their files stacked in crazy order sometimes. It's a little tricky to manipulate things while actually uploading from their site. Carolus 03:16, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Gliere Bassoon Piece

Greetings

I thought this piece was clearly PD in Canadian terms. It was a typeset and it said free on the page. What was the motive for deleting this?

Regards

Hi, Unfortunately, it's form one of the Russian pages, whose idea of copyright and public domain is strange to say the very least (You can download Philip Glass, Samuel Barber, and a host of very obviously Non-PD items from Tarakanov's site, for example). Also, it's an arrangement, not a simple re-typeset (which I might have been more inclined to let pass). Gliere's Op.39 was originally for violin and cello, so the bassoon and piano is certainly arranged by someone - probably not the composer. That, coupled with the fact that it was obviously a recent typeset done in Finale or Sibelius, made this far too questionable absent any attribution for the arranger, etc. Carolus 03:48, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Beethoven - Hallelujah

Thank you for adding the work page form me. I've just uploaded the score, maybe some tweaking are required on the work page, it's the first time I upload a score. BTW, I'd like to know some details about the upload form has been implemented, as I'm involved in the management of CPDL and maybe we should adopt a similar approach. Who can provide more info to me? Max a.k.a. Choralia 08:58, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Max, You should address your tech questions to Leonard Vertighel, who is tech admin now while Feldmahler is otherwise occupied. Your upload was basically fine, I'll take care of some minor tweaks. Thanks, Carolus 00:04, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
Actually, Feldmahler has officially forbidden me to talk about the code, so you'll have to wait for him. --Leonard Vertighel 07:34, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the info, Leonard. I'll e-mail Feldmahler with Max's request re: CPDL. Carolus 07:44, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you both, guys. It goes without saying that we (CPDL) certainly do not intend to compete with IMSLP, but just help users contributing to either sites depending on the type of material (score) available. This is essentially what happened in this case with Beethoven's "Hallelujah": I didn't make any new typeset (that would be normally published by me at CPDL), but I had a copy of an old score available, so I published it at IMSLP. The availability of similar user interfaces on both websites would facilitate user's interactions. Therefore, your support on this matter would be really appreciated. Choralia 06:09, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
We don't wish to overlap too much with CPDL either. At any rate, Feldmahler will get back to you on this issue when he gets a chance. School is just starting now for him so he is quite occupied at present with both the new school year and with a move of premises. Thanks, Carolus 06:34, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Má Vlast

I was just wondering what your view would be about splitting Má Vlast into its component parts? The main rationale being that they all have different composition, instrumentation, performance and publication histories, which would be easier to convey on individual pages. I think there's a strong argument that these are independent works in their own right, rather like the operas that make up Wagner's Ring. At least one of the Smetana cataloguers thought that way, and allocatede them independent numbers.

So what I'm suggesting is:

  1. Create 6 new work pages for the component parts
  2. Split Solc's piano arrangement and the 3 sets of orchestral parts (which themselve are a hotchpotch of different editions) into individual files, and move them to the new work pages
  3. Move the remaining music files (which are all for individual components) to the appropriate new work pages
  4. Keep the existing page for Má Vlast, with links to each of its component work pages near the top, while maybe retaining the Commercial Recordings and General Information sections below.

I'm guessing that there will be orchestral parts forthcoming shortly, and whether these come in one big chunk or six smaller ones could have a bearing on whether splitting the page is a good idea :-) What do you think? — P.davydov 07:39, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I agree that it's probably best to split this - sort of like Wagner's Ring. There are many more parts coming, and the number of arrangements for Vltava alone that could end up here could make the page ridiculous. I was thinking something similar might have to be done with Debussy's orchestral Images. Carolus 03:07, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Great, I'll get onto it, probably tomorrow... — P.davydov 18:58, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Jensen, Adolf - Innere Stimmen Op.2

Hello Carolus,

I've just recognized the editor on the title page (and the TN-file): Wilhelm Kienzl. Further I found out that he died 1941. I didn't change anything on the workpage yet.... All the best --Ralph Theo Misch 08:39, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for finding his dates. They're not urtext, so they are theoretically still under copyright in the EU. Carolus 21:18, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Leclair Violin Sonata

Hello Carolus: I have noticed that there are 2 different pages for the same Leclair sonata. The work in question is Sonata in D major "Tombeau" for violin and continuo, Op.9 No.3 -- there are 12 sonatas in this opus (see Wikipedia). The individual pages are: Violin Sonata No.3 (Leclair, Jean-Marie) and Andante alto et piano (Leclair, Jean-Marie) (viola and piano transcription for Movement I: Un poco andante). Would you mind reviewing this information and moving pages, etc. as necessary? Best regards, Hrdinský 04:39, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the notice!! There should definitely not be two pages! I'll fix ASAP Carolus 05:02, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Thank you! Hrdinský 06:31, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Ma Vlast

Hi Carolus. Could you hold off editing the new Ma Vlast pages? I'm still working on them, and getting edit conflicts. I've answered your other question on my talk page. Thanks — P.davydov 22:00, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

No problem. I'm bugging out of here in a minute. I replied on you page as well. Carolus 22:03, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for updating the copyright tags, BTW, which saved me a bit of work. I've finished the Ma Vlast sub-pages for now, but the main page itself will be a little more complicated than I thought, so I'll leave it until the morning. It's now way past my bedtime... :-) — P.davydov 22:35, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Zelenka

Is it actually worth it for me to post all 6 first editions of the Zelenka trio sonatas? Daphnis 02:14, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm not carolus, but I would say yes, if they're already scanned. Otherwise, get back to Ring, eh? ;)-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 02:15, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, already scanned. Daphnis 02:16, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Why not?-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 02:17, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

No reason I can think of. I think they were all issued before 1961, which is the date of the first thing the editor renewed in the USA. Carolus 02:51, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Two were issued in or after 1961. Is that a "yes, upload" to all 6 in this case? If so, editorial comments need be removed, yes? Daphnis 02:55, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Let me go over to the Copyright Office page and look. Not much point if we have to [TB] on something he renewed. Carolus 02:59, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Indeed. Daphnis 03:01, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

The Sonata III (HM 177) was renewed. Also a Concerto a 8 and a Suite. That's it. 3 titles only. Carolus 03:03, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

The 3rd Sonata (1961) will then be PD Canada in 2012. For the other 5, can the editorial matter be included safely as well? Thanks for doing the administrative work for me :) Daphnis 03:06, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

They're urtext except for continuo realizations, prefaces, and critical notes. Everything except No.3 is free in the USA (prefaces and all). Since No.3 was published for the first time in 1961, that will have to wait until 2012 as you mentioned. The prefaces, and continuo realizations should probably be left out as a precaution. It is possible they are meant to be included under the provisions of the urtext sections of the EU laws, but I don't know that for sure. I think it could be argued in Canada that they are protected for Schoenbaum's life plus 50 years.

Ok, all the rest coming up, sans Vorbemerkung. Daphnis 03:23, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Done. I'll leave it up to you on how you want to tag them and/or annotate the entries. Daphnis 03:57, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I tag as soon as I'm done messing with Ma Vlast. We'll have all parts shortly. Carolus 03:59, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Regarding Communication

Sorry for not replying re: the performance licensing issue. I currently do not have the ability to send e-mails, though I can read them. I also currently do not have long distance (as in, non-617) phone access, so I cannot call you either (this will, however, be fixed very soon). But do feel free to call, e-mail or write on my talk page. The move to Harvard was a bit of a mess notwithstanding the proximity, and I'm currently trying to back-paddle stuff I have queued to do.

I've also ordered a new server to replace the old server, as you might already know. The switch will hopefully go well this weekend. --Feldmahler 00:57, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

I wondered if the move had left you w/o e-mail, etc. I sent him the license, which was sort of silly as everything he's using is public domain. I will be leaving for vacation on Wednesday, Sept. 9th. and will not be back until around 10/1. I do hope the new server improves the speed issue, which I am experiencing today for the first time in any significant way. We must have seen quite a spike in traffic, which is lovely as long as we can handle it. Carolus 04:35, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, the upload worked...-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 05:59, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

No, that upload was from my personal hard drive, where I've stored the files for the Orch. Parts project. About half of them have been uploaded to the FTP server. Carolus 06:01, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

.MUS files

I'm sorry, but I can't convert .MUS files to PDF version. Can you help me with that, please? ClassicalComposers 01:41, 8 September 2009 (UTC) (Please reply on my talk page)

I'm getting ready to go on vacation, so I recommend that you post a request for help at the forum. You should be able to export to PDF directly from Finale. If you're using Notepad, there might be more steps involved. Carolus 05:28, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

I'll hop in here and offer to help. What version of Finale are you using? Daphnis 12:44, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't think it matters. If you use a PDF printer (a good free example is here), after installation, you can select it in the print dialog to print to as if it were a normal printer, and instead of actually printing, it will come up with a window asking where you want to save the PDF file. Perfect quality, and very simple. KGill talk email 20:20, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Vacation

I will be departing on vacation on Wednesday, September 9 and will not return until after October 1. I'm sure our fine copyright review team will be more than able to keep up with things while I'm away, There is no e-mail available at the place I'm staying so there's little point in e-mailing me, though I might make a trip to the nearest town an check things at the local public library if there's a rainy day and I'm sufficiently bored. I'm sure we'll be up to at least 38, 000 scores by the time I return. Carolus 05:33, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Saint-Saëns re-engravings?

Carolus, I hope I catch you before you leave, but in any case it isn't a rush. I have with me here a suspected re-engraving of some Saint-Saëns sacred vocal works published in 2004 by Carus of Stuttgart. These pieces Grove cites as being published, however I've never laid eyes on the originals. This publication is a re-engraving but mentions no editor or anything aside from the date. For future reference, how should works like these be treated? Daphnis 23:28, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Is there a claim of copyright on these? They shouldn't really be making such a claim if it is a mere re-engraving - despite the fact that publishers make such claims all the time. Unfortunately, if they are making a copyright claim on something they issued in 2004, the burden would fall upon us to prove there is no original material therein. This is the major reason for our standing house rule about recent typesets, even though we both know very well that 98% of such claims for the typesets would fail if they actually went to trial. If a copyright claim is present, I'd apply the same rule to the Carus scores (not allowed w/o permission) that I do to the folks who come here and dump recent typesets from WIMA, etc. sans permission. However, if there is no such claim present, we can consider uploading them to the library on a tentative basis with an appropriate explanation in the misc. comments field. Carolus 23:55, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

The score is marked ©2004 Alle Rechte vorbehalten, nothing more. Daphnis 00:03, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

That's really annoying. It likely would be shot down in court, but we don't have 6 figures to throw at lawyers to prove it. Typeset rule applies, sad to say. Carolus 00:05, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Damn. Very well. Daphnis 00:13, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Sonata in F (Casanovas)

Hi. Just asking, is there any reason why you changed my name to "editor" on the work page? ClassicalComposers 00:25, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, The reason was merely to save space. "Classical Composers" causes a break into 2 lines with a lot of web browsers. We should probably change the software to allow for longer contributor names without breaking, but there are many other things to fix first. Feel free to change it back if you really wish for it to appear as "Classical Composers". Regards, Carolus 00:40, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
